What does Photography mean to you?
Photography is how I capture the story of the right now. I love that I can use my camera to show others what makes the everyday moments so special and worth documenting. It makes you feel something. Years from now, I want to be able to show my three boys these images and they will know exactly what their childhood was like. I want them to see the memories from vacations, the afternoons at the park, the little quirks unique to them, the emotion of the not so perfect moments, and everything in between.
Also, like my biggest always tells me, “you will know who I am by the pictures I take.”
When did you start pursuing Photography?
Like just about any other photographer I know, my journey started about five years ago when my biggest was a baby. I started with a point-and-shoot and was really happy with my snapshots for a while, but soon I started wondering why my images looked nothing like a photographer friend of mine. It wasn’t until I was pregnant with the middle that I upgraded to a Nikon 5100. I thought that the issues I had with my images were due to the camera. Ha! I kept that camera on aperture mode for the longest time. And while, I did learn a lot, I STILL wasn’t happy with where my images were. I finally decided to let manual stop intimidating me last summer. I read every tutorial I could, studied images I loved, and practiced a lot on that 5100 until I outgrew it and I upgraded to a 610 in November.
What motivates and inspires you?
Everyday moments in all types of amazing light! This goes for my family and other people.
Can you Share with us a few of your favorite images and why you love them so much?
This was a normal morning with the baby relaxing on his brother’s bed. But there was pretty, dappled light and I just had to snap a shot.
I love this one because my middle sneaks dino out with us a lot these days. It is just so him.
And this one because the biggest wanted to know if he could fit in the monkey bars. He could. But turns out it scared him. So daddy had to come to the rescue.
What advice would you give another photography just starting up?
Don’t let manual intimidate you! There are so many free tutorials and people ready to help you learn. Also, when you fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others, just take a step back and look at your work from a year or two ago in order to remind you of how far you have come. All of us are still learning. I promise.
Nikon or Canon? And which len is attached to it?
Nikon 610. With a Nikon 35 mm f/2.0. I also have a Nikon 50 mm f/1.8, but since I bought my 35 mm a month ago, it hasn’t gone back on my camera.
Lightroom or Photoshop? Or Both?
