A little about Dana

I reside in South Jersey, just over the bridge from Philadelphia, with my husband and beautiful daughter. I am a professional singer, and run a vocal studio teaching singing lessons full time, and have the photography studio part time. Hence the name, Performer Photography!

What does photography mean to you?

Not to sound cliche, but I feel that photography actually completes my soul. Without a doubt, I have an endless creative soul. Photography is another outlet for me to express my artistic side. If I am able to capture and immortalize what otherwise would have been a fleeting moment in a photograph, than that is amazing, and worth repeating.

When did you start pursuing photography?

I’ve had a love for photography ever since I was a little girl. I was always the one with the camera at school, events, and family parties. A friend once told me when I was in college that I seemed to document my life through photos, and that stuck with me. I never really thought about it before then, but he was right. Singing always took the front seat of my career, but I finally allowed myself to pursue photography on a serious and professional level after my daughter was born.

What motivates and inspires you?

My daughter of course. I love learning and seeing things through her eyes everyday, and it gives me an amazing perspective on life in general. My goal is to capture that.

Can you share with us a few of your favorite images and why you love them so much?

Dorothy Final Final WM
This first image is the most recent in my Wizard of Oz inspired series. Judy Garland is without a doubt my favorite singer, and the magic and the beauty of the movie is a childhood favorite. My friend bought my daughter the Ruby Red Slippers for her birthday, and that is all it took to inspire the series.

Porthole New WM
The second image is a favorite of my husband and daughter. It’s a Sunday morning tradition for them to check for the weather through the “port hole” in our bedroom. Before my husband and I met, we both used to work out at Sea. I sang on cruise ships for many years, and he was in the British Merchant Navy. (He’s from Scotland.) When we were house hunting, we fell in love with our “port hole!”

The third image is my father and daughter’s hands. I always remember thinking how huge my fathers hands were when I was little, but I loved having comfort that they were big enough to protect me from anything. Now they protect my daughter too. They have an amazing relationship together.

What advice would you give another photography first starting up?

You can do it! It may be overwhelming at first, but we all start somewhere. Don’t compare yourself to others, but learn what you can from others. Never stop learning! Trust your vision, and have fun growing as an artist!

Nikon or Canon?

Canon 6d with my 35mm Sigma Art is my heaven

Lightroom or Photoshop? Both?
Both! I mainly use Lightroom, but Photoshop has some powerful tools to help complete my vision.
