A little about Ally

I am a wife and mother of two living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I currently stay home with the kiddos and have a part-time family photography business. I love being outside, preferably barefoot. My favorite time of year is autumn, but I have grown to appreciate all the seasons we have here in Minnesota. I am a very loyal friend and believe everything happens for a reason.

What does Photography mean to you?

Photography means so much. It’s my way of saving memories for my family {and for my clients}. I love that there’s no right or wrong answers in photography. There is so much freedom to express yourself. Creativity is a powerful thing!

When did you start pursuing photography?

I got into photography when I received my first camera around the age of 10. There was just something about snapping memories that had me hooked. I remember spending countless hours as a child looking through my photograph collection that I kept in a shoe box. My love for photography has never stopped. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I got my first DSLR that things got more serious for me. It was like a light switch turned on. It was the missing piece I had been looking for.

What motivates and inspires you?

Light and shadows inspire me, but my children and their childhood keep me motivated. I’m almost done with my first 365 project and it’s been a fun journey. I’ve learned so much about light while capturing memories for them.

Can you share with us a few of your favorite images and why you love them so much?

What advice would you give another photographer just starting out?

I suggest starting a 365 project for any new photographer. It’s amazing what you learn when you shoot daily! And if you can find a 365 support group to help you stay motivated, the journey will be that much better. Because it’s almost a guarantee you’ll want to quit a few times along the way.

Nikon or Canon? What lens is always attached?

I shoot with a Nikon 5200 and my Nikkor 35mm 1.8 is always attached.

Lightroom or Photoshop? Both?
Lightroom only
