Weekly Artist Feature

This week we have with us the talented Erin Green from Erin Marie Photography! She has chosen for us the theme {Laughter}! We are anxious to see what you all have for us! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Monday and enjoy getting to know your fellow photographer!!

A little about Erin

Hi, my name is Erin and I have 2 children of my own and a step-son as well. My husband and I have been married for 5 years and live in the Tampa Bay area. My son is starting middle school next month (scary) and my daughter is 2. I am a very active person and always have to be busy which is why photography was a perfect passion for me. We live near the beach and go as often as we can. My husband and I frequent NYC and swear we were born to be NYC hipsters but we missed our calling big time 🙂

What does photography mean to you?

Photography means more to me than I can explain but I will try. It has taken me out of my comfort zone in so many ways and it has pushed me to go after something I really want. For most of my life I just went with the flow and never really wanted anything bad enough to fight for it until now. I have made friends and learned so much because of photography. It’s my happy place and I although it took a while for me to find I am so thankful I did.

When did you start pursuing photography?

I started a little over a year ago. I have, all my life, followed photographers work and always saw something special or interesting in photos of people I didn’t even know. Something that made me happy. I bought my first camera a little over a year ago and have yet to put it down. I love to read blogs about photography, watch tutorials, admire others work, and practice as much as I can. I feel like I learn something new everyday.

What motivates and inspiring you?

My desire to learn and get better as well as my very active personality is what motivates me. My inspirations come from so many different places. Of course my children inspire me every day. Being able to capture these times in their lives is so awesome! I also get inspired from the many other talented photographers that I follow, my amazing photographer friends, locations I come upon and honestly I can’t go into a store without finding something I think would be so GREAT for a photoshoot. I am inspired by love, the connections of families, and a child playing naturally. I am inspired by travel and music and all things around! Just driving in the car and catching a glimpse of the contrast between the blue sky and the dark green trees makes me want to grab my camera. The list could go on and on 🙂

Can you share with us a few of your favorite images and why you love them so much?

It’s difficult to pick a few favorites, I think I get a new favorite every time I pick up my camera 🙂 I will show you all 2 old photos (when I first started on this journey) and 2 newer photos.

This is one of my favorites because it is one of the first images I took with my camera that I actually still like. This is the original edit which I have since re-edited but I figured I would share the original to show where I started from 🙂

This is another one of my early images of my daughter. I was doing an online workshop and had some challenges to try different lighting in my house so we had an impromptu mid-day bath. While I was trying to get my camera settings right (again I was new this took some time) the water landed on this toy and sprayed everywhere. Somehow I managed to capture this and save my daughter in the nick of time 🙂

This is a favorite from a recent session with a mother and daughter.

This is one of my favorites because of the perspective and composition. This shows me that I am growing as a photographer.

What advice would you give another photographer just starting up?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. For the first year or two you will feel like every time you shoot you get better, be proud of those accomplishments and know you will continue to grow. If you are learning on your own Google and Facebook groups are your best friends. Give yourself challenges like 365 day projects, or do a 5 minute project each week, or themes, this will give you something to shoot for and force you to practice. Photography can be so many things other than great images. At least it has been for me, so embrace all that this passion has to offer.

Nikon or Canon? What lens is always attached to it?

I use Nikon and my favorite lens (this week) is my 50mm 1.4.

Lightroom or Photoshop? Both?

I use both but do most of my editing in Photoshop. I pull my photos into Lightroom and only use the exposure slider and then I take to Photoshop for everything else. I would love to use Lightroom more someday.
