A little about Sarah

I was born and raised in Overland Park, Kansas and adore that city,  but now reside in Cleveland, Ohio. I’ve never tipped a cow and yes, I’ve watched the Wizard of Oz 8,000 times. We currently live in Ohio and have a 4.5 year old, 1 year old and a 7 year old pup. The winters up here blow, so we dream about warmer days and try to spend every minute we can outside when possible. My favorite Holiday is Christmas and if I could, I would visit Disney World multiple times a year. Oh, and I twirled the baton for 15 years.

What does Photography mean to you?

Simply put, it’s a way to preserve memories. I could go on and on about how important it is in our lives and how much it means to me, but I’ll just leave it as that simple explanation to save everyone time. All I know is that I LOVE having pictures hanging all over my house and when my children are grown, I will be so thankful to have preserved all of their stages of life!

When did you start pursuing photography?

Armed with a point and shoot all throughout high school and college, I conquered the world. Errrr…. I mean took crappy pictures. Then the hubs gave me my first “big girl” DSLR in 2010 and since then I have been snapping pictures constantly as well as educating myself as much as I can on the art. My business exploded after starting in 2013 and I’m loving every second of it. I do work full time and have an awesomely full-filling career, but there’s something about taking pictures and meeting new families that I can’t get enough of!

What motivates and inspires you?

Expression and light. I love trying to dig deep with my shots and always try to find that special moment, gesture, touch, or smile that isn’t fake or cheesy. Sure most families want a good ‘smile at the camera’ shot included in their session, but I always strive to go much deeper with other shots.

Can you share with us a few of your favorite images and why are they your favorite?

ITSOL 7.15.15

This image is of my sweet boy napping in the car. I adore it because his face is so innocent, but the lighting was also perfect!

FW 7.6 (1 of 1)

This image is of my baby girl and her grandmother. It was a crazy, almost creepy, misty day on the beach and that ‘thinking’ face is one of my favorites. Oh, and BELLY!

SM 7.6.15 (1 of 1)

I love this image because of the ‘conversation’ going on between baby and grandpa.

Sneak (1 of 1)-10

I guess a lot of my favorites are in black and white, but this little one was so funny to watch and I LOVE her excited face. Also, you can see momma smile behind her even though she’s in the background.

Sneaks (3 of 5)

This image is the epitome of summer to me. The golden light, the beach, the boat dock. Perfection.

Sneaks (5 of 6)

And this last image is because I’m a sucker for a good newborn session with a sleepy baby. The yummy smelling skin, snuggly positions and sweet noises make my ovaries want another!

What advice would you give another photographer just starting up?

Follow your heart and don’t worry about what others around you are doing. Allow time to grow and build a client base and stop comparing your work to other photographers. But mostly practice, practice, practice!

Nikon or Canon? What lens is always attached?

Canon! I adore my 6D and am obsessed with my 35mm f/1.4. I have a few other lenses in my arsenal and have rented others, but for what I do, the 35mm never leaves my camera!

Lightroom or Photoshop? Both?

I’m a lightroom gal!
